Just dropped, episode 40 is out!
Meet Trace Lane, academic, climate change warrior and founder of Surf Sisters For Science.
Trace Lane is a brilliant academic. She has been pursuing her dream and collecting degrees like I collect surfboards! In the name of her studies, she’s been around the world many times. But today Trace joined me on The Oceanriders Podcast to talk about her passions and PhD : surfing and climate change.
For as long as I can remember, surfers have always been confronted with the effects of human pollution first hand. We (after marine wildlife) are among the best placed to witness climate change full-on. Based on his, Trace decided to create a research platform to support her PhD : to raise awareness on the effects of climate change, not only in pollution, but also in erosion, contamination and marine biodiversity. She does this by inviting surfers to join in the conversation. I’ll let Trace do the explaining but her platform, Sea Sisters For Science is a wonderful way for us, as surfers to raise awareness on the devastating effect of mankind's addiction to « more ». Trace encourages the surfing community from all over the world to participate in her research : by witnessing in some of her video interviews, using smart fins @smarfinproject and even going on science retreats in some fabulous surfing destinations.
Beyond the ripple effect of Trace’s research, this conversation is an incredible demonstration of how surfing changes your perspective on the environment. Just as @kellyslater said «I think when a surfer becomes a surfer, it's almost like an obligation to be an environmentalist at the same time.», this obviously resonated in Trace’s mind after she learned to surf, and has given her the purpose to pursue her research. So in a way, surfing has enabled her to create a dream job!
I loved this exchange. I hope you do too.
